Hearst Bedroom Redesigned with not a Rosebud in Sight

Q: We're going to California during January, and I am keen to go to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon for the first time in my life. Somewhere I got the idea that it's been redecorated. Who'd have the nerve? What's the story?

A: You must have heard about the so-called Hearst Castle "Overnight Room," a one-off makeover venture by designer Barclay Butera.

You'll be relieved to hear that William Randolph Hearst — said to have been passionate about the decorative arts — is probably not tossing in his grave. Butera's redesign was done all in the name of charity, sponsored by the Friends of Hearst Castle, honoring the 50th anniversary of public access to the castle (now a State Historical Monument and a California State Park).

Last year, the Friends of Hearst Castle auctioned off "Hearst Castle Overnight" to a winning couple who could invite eight friends to swim in the Neptune Pool, play tennis, dine on the terrace, stroll the garden and enjoy an after-dinner movie in the Castle theater.
Then they went home, and the winning couple stayed overnight in the newly decorated pictured showcase room — with a view of the Pacific Ocean and furnishings by Hearst Castle licensees, among them Butera, who does upholstered pieces and pillows that are inspired by Mr. Hearst's collection.

They're a good match, the designer and the media magnate, sharing a taste for old Hollywood grandeur and glamour. Butera has owned homes that once belonged to Frank Sinatra and Bette Davis, and he was the creative director for the $25-million renovation of the L'Auberge del Mar in Del Mar, Calif., a former favorite playground of the stars.

More ordinary homeowners can also enjoy Butera's talents, if not within the splendor of Hearst Castle.

Barclay Butera for Hearst Castle

Designed to be one of the World’s greatest showplaces, William Randolph Heart’s 165 room castle with 127 acres of gardens and pools, is certainly one of the highlights of California. A true palace, Hearst Castle, located in San Simeon, was designed by famed San Francisco architect, Julia Morgan and was completed in 1947. It is now a California historical monument and state park.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hearst Castle, Barclay Butera, known for his knowledge and understanding of historic and glamorous old Hollywood Style, was asked to design a room at the castle. Barclay was the first person to design at the Hearst Castle since the publishing giant Hearst lived there himself.

As a result of this new partnership, Barclay was asked to design a furniture collection inspired by the collaboration of Julia Morgan and William Randolph Hearst and their architectural masterpiece. The Barclay Butera for Hearst Castle collection Debuted in 2008. Here are some of the pieces from the collection that are truly representative of the Castle’s interiors.

Barclay Butera to Redecorate Room for Hearst Castle Overnight

For 2009 Hearst Castle Overnight, renowned interior and lifestyle designer Barclay Butera will create a contemporary interior inspired by the design collaboration of Julia Morgan and William Randolph Hearst. Notably, this is the first interior design of a room at Hearst Castle since Mr. Hearst left the estate in 1947. Butera’s respect and admiration for the old Hollywood lifestyle garnered him this enviable project.

The design of this rarely seen room and special evening celebrates Mr. Hearst’s passion for the decorative arts, his graciousness in sharing this passion with countless guests and the importance of his collections housed at Hearst Castle, a State Historical Monument and California State Park. The overnight stay at the Castle was won in a benefit auction sponsored by Friends of Hearst Castle in 2008, honoring the 50th anniversary of public access to Hearst Castle. A nonprofit cooperating association, Friends of Hearst Castle supports art preservation of Hearst Castle’s world-class collection of art and artifacts and art education, including programs for youth at-risk.

The winning couple has invited eight friends for a swim in the Neptune Pool, tennis, dinner on the terrace, a garden stroll, and an after dinner movie in the Castle theater, followed by an evening just for the two of them in this specially decorated showcase room with a view of the Pacific.

The Barclay Butera designed Hearst Castle Overnight room, will feature contemporary reproductions and interpretative designs by Hearst Castle Collection licensees whose home furnishing designs bring new awareness to the depth and importance of Mr. Hearst’s collections, while contributing significantly to Hearst Castle’s preservation. Butera is one of the select licensees, having debuted upholstery and pillows over the last year. The individual pieces and design of the room for this special evening respect the historical environment of the Castle with integrity and illustrate the contemporary relevance of Hearst Castle, its art, antiques and antiquities.

Mr. Hearst was a man with a reverence for the past and anticipation of the future. By bringing together his collections at Hearst Castle, he sent the message that one should be immersed in and surrounded by art and this message continues at Hearst Castle with the preservation of the works of art and antiquities for generations to appreciate. Newport Beach designer Barclay Butera, featured as one of OC METRO’s Creative Geniuses this month, has pulled off another historic décor coup: he will be designing the Hearst Castle Overnight showcase room at the mythic estate in San Simeon. This will be the first time a room of the property has been redesigned since Hearst left the estate in 1947.

Butera will create a contemporary interior inspired by the design collaboration of famed architect Julia Morgan and William Randolph Hearst. This is the first interior design of a room at Hearst Castle since Mr. Hearst left the estate in 1947.

The room is being created to accommodate the overnight stay at the castle won in a benefit auction sponsored by Friends of Hearst Castle in 2008, honoring the 50th anniversary of public access to the property.

The winning weekend includes a swim in the Neptune Pool for the winning couple and eight guests, in addition to tennis, dinner on the terrace, a garden stroll and an after dinner movie in the castle theater. Afterward, the couple will spend the night in the Butera-decorated Hearst Castle Overnight room overlooking the Pacific.

The new décor will feature contemporary reproductions and interpretative designs by Hearst Castle Collection licensees whose home furnishing designs bring new awareness to the depth and importance of Mr. Hearst's collections, while contributing significantly to Hearst Castle's preservation.
